Sadness, shamefulness, and powerless are the most common emotions when I see people in need and this vulnerable world. “What should I do? What can I do? How can I do it?” are questions commonly asked in ethics as reactions. I often ask my self, what can I do? I’m just a student, I don’t have money, I don’t know who can I help? where can I find people in need? Most importantly why I should help them?
We can all find problems in our world and we are experts in criticizing it, but what is important is to ask why and to come up with a solution rather than complaining. Judging their life through our lens always leads to pathetic conclusions; yes 10% of the human population live under 3 dollar a day seems unreasonable. Most of them are suffocating with hunger, fear, and discrimination. They live not for life but to survive. The money I spent each day is equal to someone’s monthly salary. This is not fair. I believed that a boy somewhere in the world, about the same age as me, is much more intelligent and hardworking, however, he doesn’t have the platform, he dreams couldn’t be achieved. If one day God changed our positions, I believe he will be must be much successful and he will be a star fighting for human rights.
The underprivileged people are straws in my eyes and the scars in our society. On one hand, they are negligible eyesores: being considers as the scar on a beautiful body tainting the society. On the other hand, if there are enough straws a single spark can create a fire that is enough to bring down a forest. While being bombarded with the news of refugees and other world issues, I felt numb. Their life seems to be so far away and living in the cosmopolitan city for 16 years doesn’t help to understand their lives. The way I understand them is being myself, a student. I felt I was able to step in their shoes and see it in God’s view. The poverty simulation gives us the first person view, and it also gives us the picture in their hart which couldn’t be depicted. Pressure is simulated through music and shouting, for them, pressure comes from themselves. Mr. DJ said noting is perfect, so does simulators. During the simulation, I made up my mind to touch the “glue”. Living in a warm shelter doesn’t help me to grow at all. While rubbing dried flower off my hand, I thought why did I forget that there was an optional charity which is willing to help me. The strong desire to live to distract me from the outside world. Dignity is always being abandoned it is compared with survival.
Intense emotions can help to build grit. what I mean by intense emotions is the emotion that is usually caused by tremendous outer effect, and the effect has a long-lasting influence. For example, happy, sad, sorrowful, joy are common emotions. Intense emotions such as anxiety, horror, depression, resentment, usually have longer-lasting influences. In daily life, people tend to remember hatred and fear rather than love. I used to find charity is all about love and everything went well. Mr. DJ said don’t get too comfortable, don’t forget your initial aim, In the simulation, I feel fear and this is like the key to all motivations, Now since we have the key it is time to take action.
